No doubt about it, Colombus was a bad person. He was the one ordering his men to kill, or rape the Native Americans. He was the one who used the power of the king and queen to force his men to these things. As Howard Zinn writes in A People's History of The United States, "They (the natives) wore tiny gold ornaments... it led to Columbus... taking some natives as prisoners." He was the one who used the system of conquest for his own good. After doing all of these things, how can we let him keep his national holiday? Some flame that he found America. Not true. Some say that he was key in discovering new lands, and that we would not be living here today if it weren't for him. Not true. So why did we give him a holiday? He doesn't seem to deserve one. Colombus does not deserve a holiday. Maybe we should do something in rememberance of him, but not remembering something good. Or we could cancel the holiday all together. But I believe in remembering all of our history, not just the parts that we like. We always have to remember that there are two sides to every story, and that the first side is just as true as the second.
