New World vs. Netherlands
The Puritans did not like the Church of England, because it did not allow them religious freedom. Eventually, they became so fed up, that many decided to move to the Netherlands. Unfortunately, this didn’t work perfectly, so many Puritans eventually moved to the New World.
In the Netherlands, the Puritans had complete religious freedom. For a while, this was exactly what they wanted. But once they started having children, there became a problem. Their children, having seen how easy some of the other people in the Netherlands life was, did not want to continue their parents tradition of hard work. This was a problem. Without the children to continue the tradition, the Puritan’s religion would die!
They decided to found a colony in the New World. In this colony, everyone would be forced to work, but the Puritans would be able to practice their religion, free from conflict or traditions dying. They were okay with hard work, because it was one of their values! This made the colonies a better place to live. Still, the colonies had their problems.
Because of the hard work of so many in the colony, many Puritans became rich. Unfortunately, this meant that they would start to forget their values. Once they had had a taste of being rich, they couldn’t stop. Their only goal from then on, was to become richer and richer.
Despite the deterioration of their values, the Puritans did much better in the New World than they had in either England, or the Netherlands. Without some of the things that they learned through their experiences, our society wouldn’t be where it is today.
